VAN group is one of the best-known logistics companies in Poland, with over 30 years of history. Because of fast growth, as well as rapidly changing markets, VAN group needed to modernize its IT infrastructure. The main goal was to give employees the ability to manage data easier. They also wanted to be able to plan transport routes with little to no effort, and monitor cargo as it travels. However, the new system couldn’t be too different from the old tools, so that the employees could easily adapt to using it.
VAN group approached Pretius – who had previous experience with complex IT systems and the transportation industry – and receieved a custom-made, full-featured logistics platform that allows their employees to easily manage important data and orders. They can use the system to plan transport routes and monitor shipments in real-time – this feature is based on Here Maps, a solution well-known among the TSL companies. The software also calucaltes freight cost automatically – it uses a machine learning algorithm for this, though it still requires some human supervision (the plan is to make it fully-automated in the future when sufficient data is gathered). During the development process, the company’s technology stack has been upgraded from Oracle Forms to Oracle APEX – it’s a much newer tech, but it resembles Forms to a certain degree, so the transition was pretty seamless. VAN group’s in-house IT department was trained in APEX use to ensure quick adaptation.
VAN group’s employees can use the new platform to manage data easier than before – this means there are fewer mistakes (and these can be very costly). The option to automatically plan transport routes offers several advantages – for example, there’s less need to rely on the experience of drivers, since the software shows an optimal route. This makes it easier for people to drive in regions they don’t know very well. Additionally, automatic calculation of freights gives the company the ability to react very quickly to attractive assignments. This is crucial because being the first one to make an offer is often the deciding factor in the TSL industry. Finally, the upgraded tech stack means VAN group’s system is ready for future challenges.
