Sales commission system

Executive summary: A custom sales commission platform for a merging banking group

01

Client

A retail and business bank operating in Central Europe, part of a major international banking group and serving several million individual and business clients with a workforce of several thousand. The bank has worked with Pretius across a long-running, multi-year partnership. The project described here predates the institution's current shape: it began at one of the banks that would later consolidate, through a series of mergers, into the larger entity that exists today.

02

The core challenge

The originating bank ran a sales process built on a network of semi-independent sales agents, which made commission settlement complex and error-prone. It decided it needed a new, custom solution to calculate and settle those commissions. Crucially, the bank was also preparing to merge with two other institutions in the years ahead, so any new system had to be flexible and adaptable enough that, if it proved itself, it could eventually serve all of the merging banks.

03

Solution delivered

Pretius based the new system on its own pre-built Pretius Sales Commission product, customizing it to the bank's needs rather than starting from scratch — which dramatically shortened delivery. The software automatically calculates commissions for every sales agent based on a set of predefined variables, and was integrated with more than ten of the bank's existing systems. It made the process faster, cheaper, and far less prone to human error. When the institutions finally merged into a single bank, the Pretius-built system was chosen as the commission solution for the combined entity.
Key outcomes:
  • Automated commission settlement:
Commissions for every sales agent are calculated automatically from predefined variables, replacing a complex, manual process.
  • Faster, cheaper, less error-prone:
The new system reduced cost and human error across the entire commission workflow.
  • Built on a proven product, delivered fast: Starting from Pretius' pre-made Sales Commission solution let the team deliver a market-ready system far faster than a from-scratch build.
  • The solution chosen for the merged bank: After the merger, the Pretius system was selected as the commission platform for a combined institution serving several million clients.

Client background

The client is a retail and business bank operating in Central Europe, part of one of the world's larger banking groups. It serves several million individual and business clients and employs several thousand people. Over a multi-year partnership, Pretius has supported the bank across multiple software initiatives.

This engagement, however, started before the bank existed in its current form. It began at one of the predecessor institutions, whose commission model relied on a network of semi-independent sales agents. That structure made settling commissions genuinely complex — and it sat against a backdrop of planned consolidation: the bank was set to merge with two further institutions. Management understood that whatever software it commissioned might one day have to serve a much larger, merged organization, so adaptability was a requirement from day one, not an afterthought.

The business challenge: A complex commission process on the eve of consolidation

Before the project started, the bank was settling agent commissions through a process that was both complex and difficult to scale through a series of mergers.

That situation created several concrete pressures:

  • A complex, agent-driven commission model:
With sales running through a network of semi-independent agents, calculating who was owed what was intricate and exposed to human error.
  • A moving organizational target:
The bank was not optimizing for a single, stable entity. Two further mergers were on the roadmap, so the system had to be flexible enough to potentially serve all of the institutions involved.
  • High stakes for the right tool:
Whatever was chosen could become the commission backbone of a far larger merged bank — making reliability, accuracy, and adaptability non-negotiable.
  • Pressure to deliver quickly:
The bank needed a fully working, market-ready solution without the long timeline a ground-up build would normally require.

The decision to work with Pretius

The project was put out to tender. Pretius won on the strength of two things: prior experience building sales commission systems specifically, and a track record in enterprise-grade software development. Just as important, Pretius brought its own pre-made Pretius Sales Commission product to the table, giving the bank a proven foundation rather than a blank page.

The solution: A proven commission product, customized for the bank

Rather than building from scratch, Pretius used its pre-built Pretius Sales Commission solution as the basis for the new system, adapting and extending it wherever the bank's process required. This made the development process substantially faster than a greenfield build would have been. The resulting software automatically calculates commissions for every sales agent from a set of predefined variables, and was integrated with more than ten of the bank's existing systems.

The work combined Waterfall and Agile practices, managed by a Pretius project manager who consistently addressed the bank's needs. Day-to-day communication ran on Slack, with the Atlassian suite (Jira and Confluence) used to track development progress and documentation.

The delivery was built around three connected pillars:

01

Automated commission calculation

A rules engine that computes commissions for every sales agent based on predefined variables, removing manual calculation and the human error that came with it.

02

Deep integration with existing systems

The platform was integrated with more than ten of the bank's existing systems, so commission data flowed in and out of the wider banking environment rather than living in a silo.

03

A flexible foundation built for mergers

Because the system started from a configurable, proven product, it could be adapted to the bank's process — and, critically, was flexible enough to be considered and ultimately chosen for the merged entity.

Technologies powering the system

An image showing Java logo.

Java backend

A mature, enterprise-grade backend built in Java, suited to the reliability and scale demands of a banking commission platform.

Containerized delivery with Docker

Docker was used to package and deliver the application consistently across environments.

Frontend and data

An AngularJS web interface for users, backed by an Oracle Database (OracleDB) for the commission data.

The team

A focused Pretius team delivered the project: one project manager, one business analyst, four software developers, and one QA specialist.

Measured outcomes and business impact

The system delivered value across operational and strategic dimensions – and proved itself across a multi-bank merger.

Conclusion

This project shows how starting from a proven product – rather than a blank page – can deliver an enterprise-grade banking system fast, and flexibly enough to outlast the organization it was built for.

The originating bank did not need a generic settlement tool that would break at the first reorganization. It needed a commission system that understood a complex, agent-driven sales model and was adaptable enough to potentially serve several merging banks. By customizing its pre-built Pretius Sales Commission product instead of building from scratch, Pretius delivered a market-ready solution in about five months — one that proved itself so thoroughly that, when the institutions consolidated into a single bank, it was chosen as the commission platform for the combined entity.

Client testimonial

The communication throughout the project was very good — Pretius provided us with a project manager who always addressed our needs. The most impressive thing was how quickly the team developed a fully working, market-ready software solution for us.
